What they are

What if the power to heal ourselves were already within us?

MUSE
Multilineage-differentiating Stress-Enduring cellsStress-enduring cells, able to differentiate into multiple lineages.

The DEZAWA MUSE CELLS® represent a significant advance in regenerative medicine. Discovered by Prof. Mari Dezawa in Japan, these unique stem cells have the natural ability to home in on damaged tissue, respond to damage signals and differentiate into cells of the affected tissue.

With more than a decade of scientific research, they are being evaluated in clinical trials in acute myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, epidermolysis bullosa and spinal cord injury, among other indications.

No genetic reprogramming required
No teratoma formation in animal models
In clinical trials, given without HLA matching or immunosuppressants

An unexpected finding

In Prof. Mari Dezawa's laboratory at Tohoku University, a group of cells was identified by accident within mesenchymal cells (MSCs), able to withstand severe stress and differentiate into multiple lineages.

2010

The discovery is formalized

They are described as SSEA-3-positive cells able to differentiate into all three germ layers, with no teratoma formation in animal models.

Science

What makes them unique.

Five properties that set Muse Cells apart from any other stem cell.

Pluripotency

Pluripotency with low tumorigenic potential

They differentiate into all three germ layers and, unlike embryonic stem cells or iPSCs, did not form teratomas in animal studies.

Migration

Selective migration

They express the S1PR2 receptor, which lets them detect the S1P (sphingosine-1-phosphate) signal from damaged tissue. In animal models they homed preferentially to the injured area, while other MSCs were retained in the lungs to a greater extent.

Resilience

Stress resistance

They withstand extreme conditions such as hypoxia, serum deprivation or prolonged incubation, which allows them to be isolated without prior labeling.

Repair

Phagocytosis and differentiation

They phagocytose damaged or apoptotic cells and receive factors from them that can induce their differentiation into the tissue’s cell type.

Immunity

Immune modulation

They express HLA-G, a molecule associated with immune tolerance. In clinical trials, donor cells have been given without HLA matching or immunosuppressants.

How they work

From the source tissue to the repaired tissue.

01/ 05

Isolation

They are isolated from mesenchymal tissues: bone marrow, adipose tissue or peripheral blood.

Differences

Compared with other stem cells.

VS
Embryonic stem cells and iPSCs

Pluripotent, with low tumorigenic potential

They differentiate into all three germ layers without forming teratomas in animal models, unlike embryonic stem cells or iPSCs.

VS
iPSCs

No genetic manipulation

They require no reprogramming or genetic manipulation: they are naturally present in the body.

VS
Other mesenchymal cells

Preferential homing to injured tissue

In animal models they homed preferentially to injured areas guided by the S1P signal, with less retention in the lungs.

VS
Allogeneic transplants

No immunosuppressants in clinical trials

They express HLA-G; in clinical trials, donor cells have been given without HLA matching or immunosuppressants.

Message us on WhatsApp
What are DEZAWA MUSE CELLS®?

They are pluripotent stem cells naturally present in the body, discovered by Prof. Mari Dezawa at Tohoku University, Japan. They can home in on damaged tissue, respond to damage signals and differentiate into cells of the affected tissue.

What does MUSE stand for?

MUSE stands for Multilineage-differentiating Stress-Enduring cells: cells able to differentiate into multiple lineages and to withstand extreme stress conditions.

How are they different from other stem cells?

They are pluripotent like embryonic stem cells or iPSCs, but did not form teratomas in animal studies and require no genetic reprogramming. In animal models they also homed preferentially to injured areas, with less retention in the lungs than other mesenchymal cells.

Where do they come from?

They are isolated from mesenchymal tissues such as bone marrow, adipose tissue or peripheral blood. When exposed to controlled stress, the other cells die and Muse Cells survive, which allows them to be isolated without prior labeling.

Do they require immunosuppression?

They express HLA-G, a molecule associated with immune tolerance. In published clinical trials, donor cells have been given without HLA matching or immunosuppressants.
